If you're new to working out, doing too much can be just as bad as doing nothing at all! Here is an easy cardio workout if you are just starting out.
Please read the title carefully and notice that I said “for the newbie.” The reason I want to make this clear is because there is no such thing as an easy cardio workout, or at least an easy cardio workout that produces results and strips fat off your body while preserving muscle mass.
Make no mistake; cardio in the form of HIIT is intense and will test you dedication to losing fat. The cardio exercise I am about to propose is for beginners or those coming off a long layoff.
HIIT for Beginners
If you’re starting out for the first time, then you might not be able to complete a full HIIT session. This is why I recommend your first cardio exercise be more of a “feel out” session where you gauge where your fitness levels currently stand.
You may perform any of my HIIT videos and simply do what you can. From there, you can make tweaks and adjustments as necessary. You can modify the exercises, exercise durations, and rest durations as you see fit.
Most of my HIIT workouts include 20 second exercises followed by a 20 second rest, which you continue for the full 15-20 minute workout.
There are plenty of ways you can make this cardio easier. For one, you can simply shorten the workout by five minutes or so. You can also redistribute the exercise and rest time.
You may, for example, exercise for 15 seconds and rest for 25. Finally, you can modify the exercises to make them easier. If the exercise is a burpee, for instance, then you can minimize the height of the jump or not jump at all.
Can I Just Stick to Jogging?
Jogging is certainly an easier cardio workout, especially compared to HIIT or sprinting. This is why you can jog for 30 minutes and beyond and feel relatively alright but feel absolutely winded after 15 minutes of HIIT.
I strongly urge, however, that even if you’re a newbie that you stick to HIIT or other form of high intensity training. Yes, jogging by comparison is easy, but it won’t deliver the fat loss results you’re seeking.
Cardio Should NOT Be Easy
I must reiterate that making your cardio workouts easier is only for beginners who need to work their way up to being able to do a full session.
Once you get better and are able to fully complete one of my HIIT exercises, there is no reason for making the workout easier by scaling back. I know it’s tempting to do so given how brutal the exercises can get, but your body won’t change unless you push it to the point where it’s forced to adapt.
Believe me, this isn’t easy and even I usually dread a HIIT session because I know I’m going to be in a world of hurt for the next 15-20 minutes. This is why you have to be willing to push even when your body is begging for you to stop.
