Everything You Need to Know About Workout Supplements

There is a lot of information when it comes to the science and usage of workout supplements. This post is going to teach you everything you need to know about them.

There is somewhat of a slippery slope when it comes to supplements. Some people feel they are overpriced and overhyped, while others believe muscle gains and fat loss are futile without them.

Both lines of thinking are flawed.

Supplements are not magic pills, and if you think they place precedent over your diet and time in the gym, then you’re sorely mistaken.

By the same token, you’re just as off the mark if you believe supplements are absolutely a money waster. Science has in fact verified the benefits of many ingredients found in performance-enhancing supplements.

With all this in mind, it’s best that you stick to the basics when picking out a product. Your supplement stack really only needs to consist of no more than a few proven products. The three that will be discussed at length here are: pre-workout, fat-burners, and BCAAs.

Why do most Americans consume coffee before heading off to work? Coffee is a stimulant, or a pick-me-upper as most people refer to it..

The same goes for a pre-workout supplement taken about 30 minutes prior to exercise. The caffeine from each serving gives you a buzzed sensation where you feel physically and mentally more alert.

This should not be overlooked because more often than not, people end up skipping their workout session altogether simply because they don’t feel up for it physically.

Sure, you can rely on your mental game to force yourself to get into your training session, but why not get a solid boost from an excellent pre-workout product?

Most pre-workout supplements use good ol' caffeine, which fires you up within minutes. Caffeine has been proven time and again in independent studies to fight fatigue and boost cognitive function.

Aside from providing a sustained energy boost, caffeine has also been proven in numerous studies to boost athletic performance..

Of course, if this is the case, then why not just chug a cup of Joe or latte? Won’t it have the same effects at a fraction of the cost? Well, as you’re about to see, Pre-workout supplements actually offer two distinct advantages over coffee.

Not all caffeine is created equal. For the most part, the time-honored stimulant falls under two categories: caffeine and caffeine anhydrous.

The former is basically the variant found abundantly in coffee, tea, chocolate, and the like. The latter is the source in dried form, usually as powder or capsules.

You have to create a calorie deficit through your diet and cardio..

There’s no pill that will magically make the fat come off. However, fat burners do have a place in your arsenal especially if you’re having trouble losing the last few inches due to hitting a plateau.

This is where BCAAs come in and save the day. They are an invaluable component for stimulating protein synthesis, much more so than a high-protein diet alone.

In laymen speak, they prevent muscle breakdown and the resulting muscle dystrophy.

This study confirms the role BCAAs play in muscle recovery and alleviating soreness.

While whey and most other protein sources do contain BCAAs, they are linked to other amino acids and have to be digested before they are able to enter the bloodstream.

BCAAs in supplement form, however, are free-form, meaning they are not bonded to any other amino acids and are quickly absorbed in the bloodstream without undergoing a lengthy digestion process.
